차량에 적용되는 ECU의 수가 급격히 늘어나면서 기존의 차량 네트워크 - CAN, LIN - 보다 더욱 더 안전하고 빠른 통신기술의 개발이 필요하게 되었으며, 2000년 BMW와 DaimlerChrysler에 의해 FlexRay 컨소시엄이 발의되었다
 
FlexRay의 특징
. 중복 (Dual, Redundant) Network Channel
. Communication Cycle
  통신주기(Communication Cycle)는 정적 부분(Static Part)과 동적 부분(Dynamic Part)으로 나누어 질 수 있다. 동적 부분에서는 시분할 방식으로 전송 시간이 특정 노드에 할당되어 있어, 노드는 고정된 시점에서 메시지를 전송하게 된다. 동적 부분은 메시지가우선 순위에 의해 전송될 수 있다.
